Half-Life devs worried Gabe Newell “promised things that they couldn’t possibly deliver” for the iconic FPS, but “they just didn’t know” that they’d be able to do it yet

From the time it was revealed, it felt as if half the life of 1998 was a great success. However, when everyone was celebrating how cool in front of the game, some inside some valve were not convinced that they could meet high expectations.

Addressing the 2025 Game Developers Conference (GDC), a former chief marketing officer of Valve Monica Harrington spoke about how the game was united. The game’s E3 1998 Demo reception gave the game the ‘Best Action Game’ award, but when it was most, not everyone was confident. “After that, a basic developer came to me and told me that Gabie had promised things that he could not possibly supply.”
