How is this 5g roll out in your area? Even in 2025, there is no guarantee that you will be able to get reliable cell service wherever you go, especially if you live anywhere, especially crowded or remotely – or if you work in your company’s basement.
This is where a Wi -Fi calling comes, which takes your phone’s calls and text to Wi -Fi instead of belonging to your local cell tower. Obviously, when you are in the middle of somewhere, it will not work, but there are also time when you are more easily available than reliable Wi -Fi cellular coverage.
If it is available, the phone is first formed to use Wi-FI to get online. It is usually faster and offers more capacity than a cellular network (or, at least, was the case before the LTE and 5G were widely available). This also means that you are not using your data plan on web browsing and streaming.
However, calls and texts are being treated separately and is being rolled through the cell network even if you are preached to the fast -speed Wi -Fi network. This is partly because telephone calls are far longer than the Internet and in fact use a different type of technology (Circuit Switching vs Packet Switching,
Circuit switching, whose calls run, has traditionally been better if you just want to talk to someone – it is more reliable and offers a low delay (that’s why your phone call can be connected in a tunnel while your net flix will not be stream). But since both Wi -Fi and cellular infrastructure improve, they are discrimination fading (and, of course, we regularly use Wi -Fi to call zoom and fee time).
On a phone, Wi -Fi calls a difficult task to root calls and text through Wi -Fi networks instead of LTE or 5G, and if the Wi -Fi network is not available for any reason, it changes between the two technologies. This requires the help of the hardware (which is now mostly on handsets) and your carrier network needs help (all major US carriers are now on the plane).
As long as your carrier supports this feature, you can use Wi-Fi calling to contact emergency services-however, when you are using a cellular connection, the information that is automatically sent to them will not be so precise.
Calling WiFi Android Pixel
Assuming that your phone and your carrier support both Wi -Fi calling, these are steps to enable it on your Pixel phone:
- Open Settings in Android.
- Select Network and Internet.
- Tap Sims.
- Choose your basic SIM (usually showing the carrier’s name).
- Tap WiFi calling.
- Enable Use WiFi Calling.
- You will probably get a page Activate WiFi callingWhich tells you to enter the American address if you need to call 911 and suggest that whenever you use different Wi -Fi network, you change your location so that your location is correct. You will also be asked to agree with the terms and conditions.
- Once this work is done, you will be taken back to the Wi -Fi calling page.
- Use Emergency address Item to change your location.
- Use Rising priority Menu to determine whether your phone should be default to call the Wi-FI every time (whether a cell signal is available) or test the cellular connection first before switching to Wi-FI calling if it does not work.

If you are on a galaxy phone, the steps are slightly different:
- Open the phone app.
- Tap three dots (top right)
There is a single WiFi calling Instant Settings Toggle Button: Swipe below the upper right of the screen, then swipe on the bottom edge of the buttons panel to find it.
