There is also a group of NPC characters that you will usually not unlock, mainly locked behind the new comic item that you can find in the race. When used, it converts all racers to random NPCs that will be open to everyone. It is random about what changes you will get, but there is a complete list of people available here.

The role of the character does not include costumes, which can be unlocked by playing the role and finding different food items in the overworld or while living in the race. Doing so will randomly unlock a dress and have each couple to collect each character.
