The purpose of the IGF (Independent Games) is to encourage innovation in sports development and recognize the independent game developers that advance the medium. This year, before the game developer GDC, IGF’s Novo and Grand Prize sat down with the finalist of nominees to find topics, design decisions and tools behind each entry. There are siblings organizations under the Game Developer and GDC Information.
Ufo 50This year’s IGF Awards, nominated for the Seymas Mechanley Grand Prize, is a collection of fifty games in a number of genders produced by several different developers. It is a 8 -bit visual -style research that draws from a modern design, while also tells the story of an imaginary video game company that created them all.
The game developer caught with Derek Yu, one of the developers who worked together to create a sports collection, to discuss the rules and regulations they discussed the rules and regulations they had, so that many different developers would have a part of all their work with all of their works. Given, and through a player’s fantasy game, all these tasks went to work.
Who are you, and what was your role in development Ufo 50?
I am Derek and I was one of the Indy Game Developers who cooperated in making Ufo 50.
What is your background in making a game?
I grew up in designing the game on paper and finally used CLACK & Play To create a freeware game. Was my first commercial game AquariaAfter which was SPELUNKYFor, for, for,. Spelunky 2And recently, Ufo 50.
How did you come with your imagination? Ufo 50?
Imagine for Ufo 50 The desire to play with his friend June Perry has come, which I know when we have been a kid. I was impressed with how small we made CLACK & Play With the game “Black Software” as well as my gaming experiences in the 80s and 90s. I spent a lot of time browsing sports collections on floppy discs, CD rooms, and websites, and also in arcades.
Which development tools were used to build your game?
We used Game Maker Studio 2 to develop the game.
Ufo 50 Many creators collect many, many different games together in the same harmony (yet diverse) package to imitate the history of a fantasy game development studio, Ufosoft. What are the challenges you have to work together for ensuring a lot of different tasks? How do you feel the rules of obstacles/design?
It was necessary to find good rules that Enough was quite flexible to give us direction and allow us to work quickly. This project is easy or not enough to keep the Too, too much. Initially, we decided, for example, we will stick to a 32 -colored palette and some simple color rules, but we will not be too hard on the number of spirits on the screen. We made the goal of a strong authentic “Veb”.
One in Interview with PC GamerIt has been mentioned that changes were made BarbotaI first game Ufo 50History date, to make it feel like a developer’s first game. How did the main story of Ufosoft impress the design of some of the other sports? Overall combination design?
Most of the parts, we massaged our sports design to the right place when we went along without making many drastic changes during development. Barbota There was already an ancient sense game to start, but when we decided that this would be the first game of the UFO soft, we pushed this current feeling even further. We always started with the games we wanted to make for ourselves.
What challenges created an important story in all works? How do you tell the story of a fantasy developer in their different tasks?
We have attracted many references to the history of the UFO Soft, including the history of the Real Life Video Game and our own development experiences. It was something that we discussed and kept in mind, and we tried to create similar topics and repeated ideas with work (such as over -leaping characters and places, for example). But we only fully tied the story once when we had most pieces (50 games). Especially in this final phase, June did a lot of work to tie the story together.
How did you choose the game you wanted to make for this project? What ideas did in creating many different experiences of the game? Make sure that every game felt unique in its own way?
We – June, Eric (Sahark), and I started game ideas through mind -making and we all had many ideas that we wanted to try to make. Later, we joined Paul (Hubbins), Tariq (Palmer), and Ojiro (Fomoto), who also participated in their thoughts. Everyone in the team has their own stylish rates and we celebrated these differences – so the game was not difficult to feel unique to each other. Here was a natural instinct that every game is standing and keeping it at the forefront.
In the same package, it feels a bit to collect these games like downloading the Rome Library for an old console – the feeling that you are suddenly sinking in sports and can easily flow through them, seeing what you hold from names, screenshots and games. What was appealing to you about occupying the trip of discovery within Ufo 50? Are interested in an unknown world of a game company or console to occupy this particular type of time?
This feeling of discovery is each on each Ufo 50 The team deeply cares. For me, it started with learning about sports, and as I grew up, I started to take more interest in sports history and their development. It has become a pursuit that I enjoy playing or making a game so much and I wanted to capture it inside Ufo 50. But it won’t feel real if we can easily guide the players around the combination and indicate them. It also included real search.
Ufo 50 (8 years) took a lot of time to prepare and many developers needed to make many separate games. How did you work for your encouragement and many years in making a game? How did you maintain creativity and mental explanation while working in numerous different sports and every one needs to feel like a separate, complete title against a minigium?
He really helped work with creative people who share similar sentiments for art reflection. We were also passing our sports too much, and there was always something new to experience with 50 games. One day I am doing some design and programming on a game that I was instructing and the next day I am testing someone else’s game or helping them to polish graphics. Or may someone send me a game that I haven’t played in a long time and I will realize that it has improved! While the challenges in the past years had been a fair part of it Ufo 50 Often friends felt like a very long game jam.
What do you expect that the player will be away from this fantasy snapshot in the game’s development?
One of the most pleasant things for us is seeing the players interested in sports species or style that they never thought they would join it (or maybe it didn’t exist!). We have also seen some small players who were not until the 80s and 90s, are interested in seeking to find that period. We’re happy at any time Ufo 50 Gives excitement for sports and such history.
