Not only are we expecting the arrival of multi -gigabat NBN 2000 projects, but the current crop of NBN’s fastest projects is also designed to increase their pace. Perhaps the most interesting of these is related to the best projects of NBN 100, which are ready to promote a maximum of 500Mbps download speed – provided you are on the right type of physical NBN connection.
Although we have not yet officially confirmed what they will be called, we have chosen to dub them in the name of “NBN 500 projects” and, at least on paper, they can offer the best price in the entire NBN lineup.
Seems interesting? We cannot be more pleased. But what are the NBN 500 plans, can you sign up for one, and how much will they cost? We have deepened all the information currently available to bring answers.

The NBN company has identified September 14, 2025 as an important date for its proposed speed. This is the day when the NBN 100 projects will be activated by Speed Boost NBNCO, and the NBN 500 projects will also be available for wholesale at the wholesale level for retail service providers (RSPs).
Currently, NBN 100 projects are formally known as ‘Home Fast’ projects and as far as we know, it will not change.
As we have noted with NBN 2000 projects, which run directly to the same date, we cannot say with confidence that visitors to NBN 100 will get an immediate promotion on that day, or that you will be able to go on the NBN 500 project at this time, as it will potentially need to make RSPs backed up before the RSPs are required.
NBNCO’s official words say: “Consumers who have already purchased (NBN 100, NBN 250 or NBN 1000 Plan), or upgrades will automatically accelerate new, speeding speeds when upgrades are available by retailers at any time, retailers.”

How fast will the NBN 500 projects be?
As is the case with all speed tear names, NBN 500 projects will offer theoretical maximum download speed of 500Mbps – NBN will replace them five times more than the current projects of 100. The upload speed will increase from the current maximum 20 MBPS to 50 Mbps.
As all fixed line NBN speed is higher than 100 MBPS, NBN 500 projects will be available only to users who contact the network through the network through fiber (FTTP) or hybrid fiber cocial (HFC) connection. If you are currently linked to the node (FTTN) or fiber with fiber (FTTC), you will not have the technology to support a speeding speed.
If you are not sure what kind of connection is in your home, you can use NBN CO’s address checker. If you find that you also contact any of the inferior technologies (FTTN/C), you may be eligible for the NBN CO’s free fiber upgrade program, which provides a complete fiber FTTP installation on your address.
If your home is not currently in a qualified upgrade location, or you do not choose to upgrade, after introducing the new level, you will probably still see NBN 100 as its fastest potential option and not NBN 500. If you can take advantage of the upgrade as soon as possible, you will be in the best position to arrive in September when the increasing speed will have an effect.
How much will the NBN 500 projects cost?
In addition to the rapid increase, the best part of the proposed speed upgrade is that the theory, every month you should not cost extra.
We say ‘in theory’ because, while the NBN company has said that additional speed benefits will be available without any additional wholesale price, RSPs will still be free for their price as they will look appropriate.
However, before the rollout, the NBN 100 projects are allocated to raise the wholesale price from July, and many providers will see a few dollars in their retail costs each month. The rise in these prices was published in 2023 in the NBNCO’s special access to the Undersyting (SAU), and thus did not come as a total trauma.
We certainly hope that prices will not rise further in September, but we have to wait and see how the provider choose to handle the rollout.
Should I get an NBN 500 plan?
In some ways, this is a difficult question to answer. If you have already signed up on the NBN 100 project And You connect through the FTTP or HFC, then in theory you will automatically move to the NBN 500 project without any additional cost.
However, everyone needs to make a strong case – even those who sign one of the best projects of NBN 1000 – to go to the NBN 500 project when they are launched. The reason is that we understand that high speed (500Mbps should serve the majority of Australian homes more than appropriate) and the NBN 100 projects (usually more than a $ 10 p/m is offered to a strong price than NBN 50 projects), for a strong combination.
Even we will go, saying that we think they can become the most popular NBN plan. Currently, NBN 50 plans are with, which consists of two -thirds of the fixed line NBN subscriptions at the time of writing.
If you are currently signing one of NBN’s best 250 projects, you will also get a rapid increase to 750Mbps. If you think this may be a bit of a limit, then falling to the NBN 500 project will save you some money – surely depends on your chosen provider.
