With A1, Sony was the first to introduce a high resolution hybrid camera that was just as experts in steels and video-but the boy was expensive. Nicon and Canon followed the template with R5 II and Z8 models who offered similar abilities for a small amount, but they were still well, north of 000 4,000.
Insert S1R II. It is the first Panasonic camera that can not only shoot 8K video shoot at the usual high standard of the company, but also get 44 megapixel (MP) images at a rapid burst. And unlike its rivals, the new model is more reasonable at $ 3,300 – half the price of Sony’s A1 II. At the same time, this is a massive upgrade to the original S1R.
The main catch is a shortage of high -speed stacked sensors found in other models, which can cause some sketches in both images and video. As I discovered, although, the trade is worth the low cost and image quality of this trade is worth it. All this makes the best camera of S1R II Panasonic and has a very attractive option in the high resolution mirror lace category.
Design and handling
S1R II is like other recent Panasonic models like GH7 in terms of design and control layout. It is much lighter than the original S1R in 1.75 pounds than 2.24 pounds, so it is less tired of rotating all day. As far as handling is concerned, there is a drop in a large grip where your finger sits, making it almost impossible to fall. The exterior of the rubber on the hands is easy, though not as good as the soft material of the R5 II.
I have always liked Panasonic control and in this regard, S1R II can still be the best model of the company. With Joyce Stick and Dials on the above front, up and rear, lockable mode and top shooting dials explode. You also get a dedicated button for photos, video and slow and sharp (S&Q) methods, each with separate settings. There are a dedicated auto -fox switch, video record button, a telelight and multiple program buttons on both the top and the front.
The menu system is equally good with logical color -coded menu and submarines. You can also quickly find your most used functions in the quick menu. They all allowed me to do photos and video shoots without settings. You can also fully program the buttons, dials and quick menu for your preferences.

The back display content is the same for creators and photographers. It is up and down to allow hip photography to allow easy overhead or shooting and also rotates towards it so that Vilograms can easily film themselves. It is very fast and bright to use in sunny days. Electronic View Finder is also excellent with a resolution of 5.76 million dots and 100 % magnetization, matching Canon’s R5 II and defeating Nican Z8.
Battery life is not a strong point, though, with 350 shots on charge when using electronic view Finder or just 280 – is far below the 640 shots allowed by R5 II. It also allows for more than an hour to start and stop video shooting. However, Panasonic’s optional DMW-BG2 battery grip matches doubles and also allows battery hot swaping.
S1R II supports both SDXC UHS II and very fast CFEXPress Type B cards, while also supports SSD capture through a USB-C port such as S5 IIX and GH7. The latter two storage methods are the maximum quality of shooting in high bandwidth rarus and proverbs. Enables
Panasonic also included a full -shaped HDMI port with a microphone and headphone jack. The best possible sound quality l the, the optional XLR2 accessories allows you to capture four channels at 32 32 bit float standards to reduce the possibility of clipped audio. And finally, S1R II is the first mirror -equipped model of Panasonic that has protective carbon fiber curtains that come down to protect the sensor like recent cans and Sony models.
Efficiency

Although the original S1R can only manage the speed of the Animic 6 FPS burst, its successor can beat 40 raw images every second in silent electronic mode, defeating all its rivals-though at this speed the shooting standard is restricted to 12-bit raw. To achieve the standard of 14 bit, you need to use a mechanical shutter for burst shooting that is at the top of 9 FPS.
However, Panasonic S1R II does not have a sharp stacked sensor like rivals. The result is shutter rolling which can be a problem in some situations, such as races cars, propellers or shooting of golf swings. However, in this area, Sony’s A7R V and Panasonic improve many other non -stacked high resolution cameras like its S5 IIX.
Pre -Burt’s arrest is now available and starts when you put half pressure on the shutter. This can save you 1.5 seconds of images when you completely press the shutter button so you can remember otherwise.
With an over -Hold Phase detection autofox system and a new, fastest processor, S1R II still has the fastest and smart AF system of Panasonic. Now it can lock quickly on the face and eyes of an article and follow their movements more easily, while automatically detects and automatically switch between humans, animals, cars, motorcycles, motorcycles, bikes, trains and airplanes. I found it fast and generally reliable, but it is still not enough on the standards of Sony and Canon for speed and accuracy.
Panasonic extended stability in the body to 8 stops. It is almost equal to rivals, though Canon is on the way with 8.5 stops at R5 II. Nevertheless, it allows you to freeze the action on the shutter speed if you want to blur the waterfalls or move the cars while shooting a handheld.
Image standard
The quality of the image is like rivals .The is outstanding in detail, although Sony’s 61 -megapixel A7R V. colors are as accurate as I have seen a recent camera, match or even a canon to defeat the excellent R5 II. My supporter photographer friends put numerous shots with S1R II and found it slightly superior to their Sony A1, noting that they need white balance in the post.
Thanks to the dual iso-sided-aluminated sensor, the low lighting capacity for high resolution camera is excellent, which is well controlled with noise of ISO 12,800. Beyond this, the grain causes more trouble and the shadows can take on the green cast. JPEG does a good job in maintaining details while suppressing noise, but the ISO becomes more aggressive above 6,400.
If 44MP is not enough, S1R II offers a high resolution format that catchs eight images with a slight offset sensor position and vibrates them in the same 177 megapixel file (either raw or JPEG). It is understood that it can be used without a tripod, though I have found that I have to live a lot to get decent photos while doing so.
Video
S1R II is still the best mirror lace camera for the video for the video, though I will talk soon despite some warnings. You can get 8K 30p 10 -bit video on a reasonable high 300 Mbps, close to what Sony’s more expensive A1 can do. Better, it supports a 5.8K Process raw video internally with 4K video up to 120 FPS for maximum dynamic range, or up to 120 FPS. Finally, the S1R II is worth the “Open Gate” 3: 2, which has a complete sensor up to 6.4K (and 8K down on the road through a firmware update), making it easier for social media to shoot all kinds of formats at the same time, including a vertical video.

Some of these resolutions, especially 5.9K 60 FPS and 4K 120 FPS mode come with a slight crop of 1.1x and 1.04X respectively. The 4k 120 FPS also uses pixel bining, which is the loss of resolution and other samples such as rainbo.
It takes us to the important negative aspect: rolling shutter. The S1R II is actually a little better than the S5 II in this regard, which has a total redout speed of about 1/40th of a second, or about 25 mm in any full sensor Red Out Resolutions (8K or 5.8K). If you flog the camera or filmmakers fast moving things, it can result in rotating or scales. However, it is acceptable for regular handheld shooting.
A complication is the dynamic range of Panasonic (DRE) that increases the video dynamic range through the stop, mostly in the highlights of an image. Activation of this feature spoils the rolling shutter.
If you need to reduce the rolling shutter, you can easily disable Der without a big hit in quality. And at 60p minimizes the 4K shooting rolling shutter so that it is equivalent to stacked sensor cameras, while high quality footage is still being offered with only a light crop.
As the quality of the video is concerned, the razor is sharp and the colorful offer is accurate and pleasant. The dynamic range is at the top of the cameras that I have tested near 14 stops when shooting with Panasonic KV log, especially in DRE mode, allowed excellent shade and significant recovery. This is still great without scares, especially if you are not shooting in bright and sunny conditions.

The video AF is strong, even keeping focusing on fast -moving articles. Face, eye, animals and cars detection work well, though once again, this system is not as reliable as I saw on the latest models of Sony and Canon.
However, S1R II offers more stability options than its rivals. Optical stability provides good results for handheld video, while electronic stability further smooth things. Until the extremely aggressive high EIS setting it provides easily harmony like cranking jumbles but introduces an important 1.5x crop.
Along with them, Panasonic introduced something called “Criples” EIS. This order benefits from the unused areas of the sensor to fix the corner’s distortion with the special wide angle lenses to fix the coin. I noticed that it has done a great job to reduce the rolling shutter for quick pan and walking, which can help some creators address such concerns.
So yes, rolling shutter wobel is worse than rivals like R5 II on this camera. However, there are ways to work around. If the least skiing is an important feature, then don’t buy S1R II, but for most consumers this should not be a problem, especially at this price.
Wrap

S1R II is Panasonic’s best hybrid mirrorless camera, which offers a huge balance of photography and video powers. It is also the cheapest new camera in the high resolution hybrid full frame category, which reduces competitors like Canon’s R5 II and Nicon Z8.
The central negative aspect is the rolling shutter that mainly affects the video. As I mentioned, although, these content will not raise any problem for the creators and there are works. In addition, it provides outstanding image and video quality by offering modern features such as cut -off electronic stability.
If you need even more resolution, Sony’s 61MP A7r V offers a bit better image standards. And if the rolling shutter is really a problem I will recommend Canon’s R5 II (though the cost of this model is $ 1,000 more) or Nican Z 8. Do you want to spend much less, canon R6 II or even Panasonic’s S5 II or S5 IIX solid choices. For other hybrid shooters, though, Panasonic’s S1R II is a great choice.
