During the Expo, I sat down with the founder and CEO of PM Studios to talk about the development and distribution of sports, its upcoming plans, and the physical release of the digital majority market.
Thegimer: Can you teach us a small history of Prime Minister Studios?
Mike Yam: Of course, so I started this company 20 years ago. As a developer, I made a game called DJMAX. I can’t publish the game, so I published it myself. The game started. It was a high seller for the PSP in South Korea, along with Monster Hunter, and then the company took off and we started working for rent. We made some Barbie games, but I was not really happy to do so.
And then, finally, when Vita came around, Sony asked if we could resume DJMAX for Vita, so I did, and then he took off. I had many friends who couldn’t publish their games, so I started to help them. Then he told his friends, and this led to the racing games and RPG and action games. We have done different works. We come from a retail background, so I had the ability to distribute retail for other publishers and developers. We have a lot of companies and a lot of partnerships for many companies and many sports.
TG: Okay, so the company’s three different weapons are like. There is development and publication, and then the publication and distribution of a partner. Have you always had these three?
YM: We have been doing all three for a while. Why don’t you see a lot of things you name because we do a lot of white label service, so I don’t put my brand in front of the package. I emphasize the developer in a way, and we are boys behind the curtain. Many people in the industry know what we do, so I think the word of the mouth has spread, and I think Black Meth: Wokong was probably one of the big people where everyone realized who we are, but we have been doing this for a long time.
TG: It is such a sports selection group. What I had to play this weekend was very different experiences. Do you think that the Prime Minister has a brand?
YM: So, sadly, maybe not. I think our biggest problem is, you know, when you think about fighting sports, you think about Cape work. RPG, you think of Atlas. Sports games, many people think of EA. So, we just like the game, maybe a little too much. Which gender is not focused, so I understand that when you see all our titles, you see family games, cope games, action-RPG, action games, action games, first person’s shooter. These are a lot of Indi Games, and we are trying to watch every game and see if we think we can help this group. See if this is something we feel that we can work and work on them in a good contribution, and we try to help everyone.
TG: Are there sports that are the solely manufactured at home that don’t contribute with any other studios?
YM: Yes, we still prepare our games. Right now, we have a game called Dragon from an internal team. With this game, many of us were rhythm game developers, but we loved Diablo 2 and we did not have the ability to do the topdown 3D full-on-action-RPG. So, we said, hey, we are good in 2D spirits, let’s try to make 2D diabetic. And that’s the game.
I met a developer. He edited the game called Rospat Champions for Dota, and I assured him that we should make a standstone game. So, now, we are making the Rochep Champions 2 in the house. Evulotist is another game that I met with developers a long time ago. They were trying to get a kickstarter, and they asked me to become a producer in the project, so I moved it forward. And we have been preparing this thing for almost five years now. It takes a lot of time because our purpose was to draw everything from hand.
TG: It seems that you have a really good look for projects. How is that process?
YM: I am just a huge game. I play a lot of video games, I used to compete. I like a completion, so I still get 100 % successes in many sports. I have more than 300 Platinum Trophy at the PlayStation. I play a lot of games. I know in a way that I think what I can do, or something new I have never seen in a long time. Like our game table flip simulator, we saw an arcade game a long time ago where you flip the table. You actually flip a table on the arcade. We thought, hey, we should rebuild something like this new audience. We try all kinds of unique things.
TG: Do you think when you see something of your choice, what you can do with it is fully configured?
YM: Yes, I do. And maybe I may not like a game, but another member of the team really likes it .. We have a process where we really allow them to fight for the game. So, it is almost like a Develop developer who is pitching for us, but in fact, one of our own guys is pulling us about why he thinks the game is about to work. I don’t want to be the only person to choose sports, so I let everyone say that. These days I want to be less than a Green Light boy. It should be dependent on each as a collective group. But in cases where I have to meet boys like Platin Games, and I have the opportunity to work with former rare boys who worked on Banju Kazi, it was like a given. I really wanted to be a part of it.
TG: But I imagine that many of your posts reflect your taste.
YM: Yes, but once again, more than half the things you see is not really. Like Black Mutk: Wokong, I knew about it, and obviously, I loved it. But they were many team members who really continue to move forward and fight.
TG: Physical division seems as if it is something that is becoming more difficult. Now that the digital distribution has become mostly market, how has it changed things for you?
YM: Four years ago, he began to move a lot, but I would say about two and a half years ago, he moved the second way. You can think about it like a mobile market, where anyone can publish something and keep it in the digital market. The video game market is fully flooded. We have thousands of sports at a time, and thus everyone is dead. Everyone is saying that they released the game on steam last year, and they did not do well. And now everyone is closing.
But when you look at the retail, not everyone can keep it out. Not everyone can be released on the console. You need to release something there you need a special skill and resources, so it’s a little developed. This is a small market that is a bit difficult to enter, so we have really done better because we do not have that much competition. You go to the target or the best boob and you will see 30 PlayStation Games, 40 switch games. It is very easy to attract users in a store, while when we are on the Ashes or PlayStation network, you can’t get a game unless you find it.
TG: It’s interesting. When you go to a game stop or target, each box is the same size. They are all on a wall, but it’s not like this on steam and Nintendo, some games are bigger than others and you really have no control over it.
YM: Yes, unless you are a big publisher, you do not get any demeanor. Our relationship with the retail gives us opportunities. I am able to put a trailer in stores and hang posters.
TG: So is it like a collector and a hobby’s audience that moves more about physical?
YM: There are several markets. You have a lot of tough concerts that refuse to buy digital. You are buying a lot of moms and father (physical). And then when they buy the system, a comfortable walk in search of a game.
TG: I feel like I really like, I am starting to care more about the physical things for these games.
YM: I think this is important because it is a different experience. You can borrow your friend, do you know? I met my best friend by giving a game borrowing at school, and then he let me borrow his game. So now you have a kind of relationship with a physical copy. You can still trade it and get another game. Later, you really want to play it again, but if you don’t have an internet connection or the PlayStation network goes down, whatever happens, it prevents you from playing. I think physical sports are still important.
TG: Is this something you want to make sure you are maintained?
YM: I’m trying my best. Every company that tries to work with us or asks for help, I really try to make sure we can help them. I think you will probably see a lot of news from us, especially after black.
TG: I imagine physical which performed very well.
YM: Yes, I wish I could show this number, but those boys are very private and I respect it. But he has shown me and all distributors and partners and retailers that it is still very healthy. Thanks to me during Christmas and the New Year and saying that he had saved his business, I had many calls. There are many areas. In some countries like Spain and Italy, it was a huge hit movie and I didn’t know what the reason was. In places where they still do not have modern Internet technology, they will not download 100 gigabytes because they are paying every data. In such places, where bandout is low or slow, they were waiting for a physical copy of the game.
