It doesn’t matter if you already knew about it or not – Joel’s death in the last of the American Season 2 is completely heartbreaking. And it could have been even more surprising, but when photographing such an important moment for the story, director Mark Milewad wanted to “avoid overturning”.
“I am not very interested in showing violence myself,” he explained in a recent interview. Hollywood reporterWhere he opened the title of Episode 2 through the valley about the challenges of directing.
“But what attracted Abbey to a place where he was suppressing such extraordinary violence – which is very interesting. So after establishing this barbarism and, hope why this young man was driven towards such extraordinary violence and oppression, most of them wanted to keep the screen and keep the screen.
In the scene, we see that Abe (Catlin Dourin played) Joel (Pedro Pascal played) hit his face repeatedly in his knees and hit him hard from the golf club. Many of these extreme violence have been highlighted on the screen, but when we reduce this scene to show the arrival of Else (paid by Bella Ramsey), we get some time to breathe.
“The important thing for me was to try to deliver these extraordinary words on the page and to do justice at the moment. It is about working with actors and protecting and supporting Caitlin and Bella in this case, which both have to go to make themselves incredibly weak.
“There is a lot of blindness of it. Hopefully to feel a sympathetic relationship with this cast when it is really the right time to emphasize for this Zen state. We always know that we are there because I can’t talk after taking, or I’m just in tears.”
Mileroid said he was not expecting the scene to be emotional, as he had been preparing for it for months, but Bella Ramsey’s performance forced him to cry on the seat. “Bella took it to the level where I had just destroyed. I could not help connect at any level as a parent when a young man helps to see such pain when the performance is so good. It is difficult to separate from the room and think that it is just acting.”
For the director, the “most frightening” and “extremely satisfactory” thing in this event is that “close -up on Bella” when he realizes that Joel is dead. “It will be with me forever – and hopefully with some audience.”
